Philip Trenon (1827–1906) was a French-born British artist, illustrator and engraver. He created illustrations for works by Hugo, George Sand, Edmondo de Amicis, Madame de La Fayette, Jacques Copeau and others.
Life and work
Born Philip A. Trenon, he was brought up in Paris where he made a career as a painter. He was the elder brother of the sculptor François Trenon. He studied at the Académie Julian and became a follower of Courtois, and worked for the major French artists of the period, Jean-Léon Gérôme, Théodore Géricault, and Eugène Delacroix. In 1851 he moved to London, where he worked for John Leighton, who called him a "prentice of the pencil". He also illustrated the books of Madame de La Fayette, and for others, including the book New Heaven and New Earth (1861) by George Sand. His illustration for Mrs. Copeau's Poem (1864) won a prize at the Paris Salon.
Trenon married Isabella Trotter in 1858. He contributed a number of illustrations to the Illustration (1855–1866) magazine. Among others he illustrated: The Ornamental Garden (1862); Little Rivers (1865); Sehnsucht (1865); The River Bank (1866); The Sea (1867); and Picturesque England (1868). He died in 1906.
